Introduction:

The objective of the method statement is to outline the efficient and safe method of work to follow in order to safely and efficiently complete the Trench Excavation & Backfill for Electrical underground Cable Laying and precautionary measures taken to protect workers and existing facilities.

Scope of Work:

  • Permit to work shall be raised for excavation clearly mentioning the location of work, size of excavation and levels
  • Excavation area shall be surveyed and marked to the lines and levels as shown on the drawings. Excavation Methodology
  • The area of excavation will be cordoned off using barricading to stop trespassers.
  • Required sign boards such as “Deep excavation” “MEN WORKING” “DANGER” and warning boards will be placed to indicate the excavation work.
  • If needed, Proper temporary supports shall be provided to the adjacent structure prior to start excavation. Excavation Methodology
  • Check the area of excavation to find out any underground facilities other than listed in as built drawing by using appropriate equipment such as cable detector, metal detector and trail/test pits to find out existing underground pipes, structures.
  • Excavation near existing utilities (electrical cables, pipes etc.) shall take all necessary precautions to protect the service with proper supports and cover.
  • Manual excavation shall be carried for trench and trial pits.
  • Trench shall be excavated by using hand tools as per marking and levels with proper protection of sides. If Excavation depth exceeds 1.2 m, proper shoring should be provided on sides of trench. Trenches and Excavations
  • The bottom of trench shall be levelled and well compacted.
  • Excavated materials shall be removed, stockpiled or deposited away from the excavation area for reuse or dispose in the approved dumping area as directed by PMCM.
  • 150mm sand bedding shall be done at bottom of trench prior to the installation of cable. Trenches and Excavations
  • Cable shall be laid over sand bedding.
  • 300mm sand layer shall be laid over cable.
  • Cable protection tiles shall be laid over sand layer.
  • Excavated soil shall be backfilled for thickness of 150mm per layer above the cable protection tiles. Stones and boulder shall be avoided from mixing with backfill soil.
  • Each backfill layer shall be well compacted and FDT test shall be conducted for compaction.
  • Install cable warning tape at height of 250mm from top of cable protection tiles.

Inspection Hold Points:

FDT Testing Shall be witnessed by Consultant. Excavator Safe Work Method Statement

Monitoring and Compliance:

  • A Supervisor and HSE officer will be monitoring the activity at all times.
  • Supervisor will ensure that the RAMS are communicated to the operatives prior to commencement of the activity.
  • Start briefing will be conducted and communicated to the operative. HSE Officer will ensure that all required documents are valid and available. 3rd party certificates for equipment, inspection on safety equipment and verify require training of employees
  • Prior to start activity work permit to issue and approved by all relevant parties.

Access and Egress to Testing AREAS:

Access and egress to the working areas will be as follows:

  • Designated working areas to be identified and barricaded. Approved signage (e.g.: ear protect, dust mask, slipping hazard, falling object etc.) Shall be followed in the working location. Access will be provided as per parcel availability.

Fall Protection Measure:

  • Full body harness will be used during activity and anchored points (LANYARD) will be attached to the scaffolding at all times during the activity. Excavation SWMS

  • Head Protection (Hard hat)
  • Hand protection (Hand gloves)
  • Foot protection (Safety Shoes)
  • High visibility Vest

Emergency Procedures & Arrangements:

In case of any Emergency, emergency arrangements will be carries out in accordance with the Emergency Response Plan Underground Cable Installation Method
